- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9-inch deep-dish pie plate with butter, then sprinkle lightly with cocoa powder.
- Warm the milk in a saucepan over medium heat until steaming, stirring occasionally.
- In a bowl, whisk eggs, sugar, flour, arrowroot, 2 tbsp cocoa powder, and salt until smooth.
- Slowly whisk 1 cup of warm milk into this mixture to temper the eggs.
- Return mixture to saucepan, whisking over medium heat until thickened, 2–5 minutes. The filling should have a pudding-like consistency.
- Remove from heat, stir in butter and dark chocolate chips until smooth.
- Pour filling into prepared pie pan and smooth surface.
- Whisk together egg, sugar, water, and cocoa powder for topping. Brush gently over the pie.
- Bake for 45–50 minutes, until set but slightly jiggly. Cool completely before serving.
Notes
Best served chilled or at room temperature. For extra indulgence, serve with whipped cream or a dusting of powdered sugar.
